Below is a copy of a letter to the editor that captures what I think the US-Russia Summit can and hopefully will accomplish as my experience reflected in this letter did for me.

To the Editor:

In 1944 my father was a Lieutenant JG in the U.S. Navy. That year the U.S. extended the lend-lease program to Russia thereby providing American built ships to the Russian Navy to fight Germany. A group of Russian Admirals came to my father’s Naval Base to confer with U.S. Admirals. They needed a translator. Nobody on the base spoke Russian. However, my father, the son of Montenegrin immigrants, spoke Serbo-Croatian, a language similar to Russian, in his childhood home.

There is a formal form of address in both Russian and Serbo-Croatian appropriate for a Lieutenant when talking with Admirals. My father had only learned the familiar form, the one used with intimate family members and when addressing small children. I think you see where I’m going here.

When the U.S. Admirals realized that my father was addressing the Russians inappropriately, they were horrified that the Russian Admirals would become offended and the whole meeting would be a disaster. My father, however, told a different story. Rather than being offended, the Russians fully appreciated the situation, and even found it quite amusing. Thanks to Russian graciousness they all got along wonderfully and the meeting was a great success.

I was born in 1947. I was raised with that story. When the U.S. anti-Russian Cold War propaganda unfolded I reacted, even at a young age, with skepticism. Regarding such propaganda, I still do. The takeaway lesson; what we tell our children about people can either poison their minds or set the stage for goodwill, cooperation, understanding and positive relationships. It can help us learn to trust each other and work together for peace and common prosperity.

Okay, Scott, you've outed youtube for posting Russian Movies about Russia and their teaching of the Russian soul; don't you realize those fanatics at GooGoo will likely take those movies down now? They hate us if we do not hate Russia!

I just watched your video about the event occurring on June 18 and would like to share some of my experience with Russia. I joined the Navy when I was 17. I ended up as an Airborne Electronic Warfare Operator flying against the Russian Navy. It was at the end of the Cold War and of course all things Russian were bad. A group of us were in a typical sailor bar in Naples, Italy when a group of Russian sailors I assume from a "merchant" ship walked in. The next thing I knew, we were buying them drinks and swapping uniform pieces. In walks the Zampolit with our Shore Patrol....the Russian Sailors start to panic because they know all of them will be put on report for fraternizing with us......one of our guys throws a beer bottle at Shore Patrol and all hell breaks loose.....most of the Russian sailors got away and we were happy about that. That was my first contact with actual Russians and it reinforced my image that they were not "evil".

Twelve years later, the Soviet Union had collapsed and Russia was still the wild west when I made my first trip there. I absolutely fell in love with Russia on that short 5 day trip, in large part because the Russian soul touched me. I got robbed by the police at gunpoint in a metro station but it did not dampen my euphoria.....I was based in Newark, flying for a small airline. I started to bid my trips so that I would have a block of at least 5 days off so that I could run over to JFK and jumpseat to Moscow or St. Petersburg. It became a monthly trip and as my Russian improved, my love of Russia deepened. Then I discovered Novisibirsk which became one of the few cities in the world that I love......Then I discovered Khabarovsk.... I married a woman from there but it did not work out. By then I was flying heavy cargo and we would have to stop in Khabarovsk for fuel on our way to Anchorage. Alas.....the airplane never broke in Khabarovsk. Crossing Magadan I would talk to the Russian controllers when the radio was not busy.

In 2009 I was furloughed for 13 months. Rather than sit around in a fruitless search for work, I went to Russia with the hopes of teaching English. I traveled by train to Volgagrad, spent time there, then on to Novisibirsk..... I had job offers but could not get a work permit because at the time the Russians had their own immigration problems and had a very strict quota system. So I ended up in Dnepropetrovsk in Ukraine for 6 months because I did not need a work permit there. I had traveled to Ukraine many times before and felt an equally strong love for that country.

The Russian soul is special. My Russian and Ukrainian friends were always surprised that I had such affection for their countries. They would lament "But America is so much richer and has a higher standard of living...." I would reply "Materially we have more but spiritually we are bankrupt." Have you ever gone into the forest, dug a hole and lit a fire to cook shashlik? That embodies the Russian soul...... it is not about cooking and eating....it is a process of bonding and celebrating being alive....Americans have nothing similar.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, I have been pissed off and appalled by the way the US and the West in general have treated Russia. Obviously the lessons of Versailles have been forgotten. You don't take a great country and humiliate it and then expect anything good to come out of it. But that is exactly what we did to Russia. Say what you want about Putin but he did give the Russian people back their pride and that is a wonderful thing. Meanwhile the ass clowns "running" our government and propaganda services, continue to demonstrate how truly vile they are. The sad thing is that they lack the self-awareness to see any of it and realize what a great friend Russia could be.

Scott, while listening to this video, I had so many wonderful memories come back. Thank you.

Scott, I loved this conversation! Thank you so much. You and Pavel are a dynamite duo. Speaking of movies, yes it's shameful that so many American movies portray Russians as the bad guys. But as you indicated, the script was briefly flipped during WWII. For example, there's a Hollywood movie called "Days of Glory" from the 1940's about the brave Russians (then our allies) fighting the evil Nazis, with none other than Gregory Peck playing the lead role of Vladimir, leaving no question who the good guys were.

Thanks also for referencing the classic Russian New Years Eve movie from the 1970's, "Irony of Fate", a hilarious comedy, satire on certain quirks of the Soviet system, and engaging portrayal of Russian people and their collective soul, all in one film!

After consuming so much negative news these days, watching you talk with Pavel has been so uplifting and a breath of fresh air. Thanks again and I look forward to watching the Peoples Summit!!

There’s that matter of being ‘in the Marines’.

If we say we’re in America, we could mean being within the geographical boundaries of America. It’s the same with being in Russia. But we could all be in Christ, no matter where we are geographically, like a U.S. Marine remains a U.S. Marine, no matter what country he is in.

"in Christ"

https://blb.sc/00CE65

When you’re in the Marines it doesn’t matter where you are, you’re still in the Marines. It’s the same with being “in Christ”.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV)

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Galatians 3:26 (KJV)

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:28 (KJV)

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 6:15 (KJV)

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

Ephesians 2:6 (KJV)

And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:

Ephesians 2:13 (KJV)

But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Colossians 1:28 (KJV)

Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

2 Timothy 3:12 (KJV)

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

1 Peter 3:16 (KJV)

Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

1 Peter 5:14 (KJV)

Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace [be] with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Romans 3:24 (KJV)

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Romans 8:1 (KJV)

[There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:2 (KJV)

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:39 (KJV)

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 9:1 (KJV)

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,

Romans 12:5 (KJV)

So we, [being] many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

1 Corinthians 1:30 (KJV)

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

1 Corinthians 3:1 (KJV)

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, [even] as unto babes in Christ.

1 Corinthians 4:10 (KJV)

We [are] fools for Christ's sake, but ye [are] wise in Christ; we [are] weak, but ye [are] strong; ye [are] honourable, but we [are] despised.

1 Corinthians 15:19 (KJV)

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

1 Corinthians 15:22 (KJV)

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:31 (KJV)

I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

1 Corinthians 16:24 (KJV)

My love [be] with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

2 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)

Now thanks [be] unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

2 Corinthians 2:17 (KJV)

For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

2 Corinthians 3:14 (KJV)

But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which [vail] is done away in Christ.

Of course, being in the Marines, is a lot like being In the Navy. There’s pride, unity, self respect, devotion and honour.

Of course, there’s a lot of don’t ask, don’t tell, in any military organization, AKA don’t ask, don’t tell, OR -NEED TO KNOW.

1 Corinthians 4:1 (KJV)

Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Some mysteries won’t fly in unpleasant company.

Matthew 7:6 (KJV) Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

But Jon Stewart is flying.

The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

Matthew 23:12 (KJV)

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Luke 14:11 (KJV)

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Luke 18:14 (KJV)

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified [rather] than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

1 Peter 5:6 (KJV)

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

John 3:1-8 (NET) 1 Now a certain man, a Pharisee named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council, 2 came to Jesus at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs that you do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus replied, "I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother's womb and be born a second time, can he?" 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must all be born from above.' 8 The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

I believe one of the reasons the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the main Cathedral of the Armed Forces of Russia in the Moscow area, was built to help Russian Veterans recover their soul after the traumas of war. Also the Nutcracker Suite is very popular in the US in the lead up to Christmas
