I used to think that what happened in Chechnya was all Russia and Putins fault, but seeing how the West, particularly Mossad, CIA and MI6, are always creating, arming and training terrorists (with or without the terrorists knowledge) to destabilise and weaken other states, I can understand and sympathise more with the actions of the states being constantly attacked. It’s a bit like China and the Uyghurs. The US, and the rest, create, arm and train ISIS, recruit the Uyghurs, and hope to use them to undermine China, as they did with Syria. The same as we’ve seen in Iran for decades, Cuba, and pretty much anywhere else trying to be independent.

What an amazing journey, Scott. Every time I see the Chechnian leader meeting with President Putin, it makes me respect the Russian President even more.
Russia, inherited URSS systems and cultures (102 different national identities if I remember correctly) always has taught their population through a unified efficient educational system that the URSS first and Russia afterward had a lot of nations compounding the richest cultural wealth on this planet. Yet, they were over everything citizens of the URSS! In that sense, it's correct saying that the URSS didn't make differences between those citizens except for the acceptance of their cultural differences originated in the largest country over this planet.
And that educational system was exported to the modern world to places where, later, you can see a replication of the same effect: Yugoslavia under Tito. They had different people religions and not so different cultural differences (they shared basically the same geography and climate) that were managed smartly and peacefully. Once the educational system was changed, the "message" conveyed changed.

Your efforts remind me of an earlier effort- back in the mid 1980s, called "Space Bridge": citizen-to-citizen tele-meetings between Russians and Americans hosted by Vladimir Pozner; in perhaps a couple of which i had the good fortune to participate through Beyond War. Those connections gave me a bit of hope at the time, though anti-Russian propaganda has if anything grown over the decades since.
Partly as a result of the Space Bridge program, I suspect, I managed to visit then-Leningrad and met some fine people and in the process gain a little bit of understanding about Russian culture.
Yes, your individual efforts remind me much of the spirit of those earlier, hope-inspiring times. Let's hope that this is both a continuance and a much needed fresh start.
Although my ancestors were Russian Jews, I know next to nothing of Russian history, other than their suffering and sacrifice in WWII, which was pivotal in defeating Hitler.

Yes we too have felt the same way with Doctorow. We don't understand why the Judge has him on.
