Right now, I feel Trump has totally dumped his base. Even if his adventures in Venezuela and Greenland go exactly as he thinks they will. A big "if". They will harm his base. Oligarchs will build rare earth refining facilities without paying attention to environmental concerns because Greenland won't have a political voice. What politician or federal bureaucrat would pay attention to anyone without a political voice?
To be truthful, I think there is something to be said to federal defunding of universities altogether. The suits claim that the Trump administration is trying to punish programs that go against Trump's orientation. I don't doubt that, but university research programs have long been captured by special interests and non-funding of programs contrary to the interests of university sponsors. For instance, what research programs on the effectiveness and side effects of the Covid vaccine were funded? What programs examining the real existence of climate change were funded? Or programs investigating the effects of unpublicized climate change actions by the US military and federal agencies such as NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). It's well known that research grant awards are made by senior faculty with axes to grind in many universities.
In other words, I have a certain sympathy with efforts to get US funding away from Universities. I realize the original land grant programs of the nineteenth century were vastly beneficial to the country. I have zero sympathy with university shills who use federal grants to continually raise the price of education and get students into lifelong debt that cannot be discharged by bankruptcy.
