Funny about the title you chose for this rant: one of the chapters of my memoir is also titled Back to the Future because as a child of White Russians I was tired to hear about nothing but the horrors of Bolshevism and Stalinism, and like Scott, decided to use my fluency in Russian to go on people to people peace trips to the Soviet Union in the 80s. I wish somebody would review my memoir because it's all about bridging Russian-American relations. Oh well.
I have downloaded it, and will read it today when I get the chance, no doubt it will be an interesting read. Thank you for making it available, I am sure your experiences are most valuable to the wider community, and Scott's work.
Galina, Nobody knows about your memoirs, I would like to read it because it is something that I've wanted to do for some time now. Not go to Russia, but perhaps to have some e-mail acquaintances or even some friends there to communicate with, just to satisfy my curiosity and perhaps some adventure could arrive from that.
So, Babushka Galina. It was an interesting 10 minute read. I was hoping that it would have been longer and with a few more specific stories of close call encounters with fate, or destiny. But I suppose that's general way that stories get passed down of family lineage survival. Specifics get left out, because most people do not want to re-live the experience.
Babushka, The story is too short and incomplete. for the 10 minute read. It comes out to a dollar a minute. That would be $60.00/hr. Most make a lot less than that. If you ask for let's say a small token of $3.00 or even 4 or 5 dollars you will earn more money for your family by selling in volume. The work is done and there is no business overhead. Make it a option of what the reader can afford..
This link shows a short introduction to the book but you can also read the full 350 page book for free in the link at the top of the page. Looking forward to hear what you think.
Thank you very much. I just opened your link and now, I will start reading it. I would like to express my gratitude and exclaim that you certainly seem to have a graceful nature about you. Once again, I thank you for that and you have my most sincere respect too.
Why won't Russia get down and stay down on its knees? Maybe Obama, Biden, Trump and the deep state should ask Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler that question.
People with inferiority complex are the one who always need the others to be below them, can't stand them to be at an equal level. Seems to be the case of people in power in the USA. It would take people with a higher spirit in power to really construct, with dialogue, a sustainable state of peace and cooperation between peoples, in this case between USA and Russia, able to give a better life to all of us.
An eloquent argument for the Cold War Scott, but if you remember the 'Back to The Future' script, Marty McFly didn't go back to the past to fix things, he went back because he had nowhere else to go (Libyan terrorists chasing him), and in the process of doing that, messed up his own timeline, such that he started to fade away to nothingness, because his young Mother, clearly not knowing who he was, found him attractive, and in doing so, broke the future. Then he had to try to get his Mother to fall in Love with his father, who was a bit of a wimp. He did manage that, and he still changed the future - Instead of Biff being his Fathers future PIA, his father and Biff reversed roles to a point - His father wasn't cruel to Biff, and the family was much better off financially.
In the next two instalments of 'Back to The Future', professed Brown repeatedly warns of the dangers of going back in time, and indeed things go south very quickly.
I do not like the idea of going backwards in time at all, The Cold War was a terrifying time, constantly in fear of The 'mad' Russians finding a way to first-strike The West (that was the narrative of the day), and indeed the USA doing the same accidentally, the hidden wars where people still died, the machinations on both sides as the USA developed its plans to beat Russia into subservience, the CIA given free reign to infiltrate and mess-up economies and countries left, right, and centre, resulting in The Soviet Union crumbling economically.
I remember those days well, the fear and madness of those days was palpable, and the fall of The Berlin Wall brought huge relief. Not because The Soviets had been defeated Militarily, but economically, by US-Style capitalism. I remember the hope, and would argue that Putin was the result of that hope, as The USA continued to try and beat The New Russia into submissiveness, a submissiveness that I too did not want Russia to give in to.
Like you I grew up having a healthy fear and respect of the Soviet Union, but when that Wall came down, I saw Russia as a New partner, a hope for their people to prosper, a hope for friendship - and that too I think was the hope of a Young Vladimir Putin.
I do not want to go back to that mentality, I want to see Americans, and Europeans wake the fuck up, and I don't mean woketastically waking up, I mean seeing and recognising all Nations as valuable, equal partners. I would argue, that in spite of America's and NATO's constant desire for an enemy to justify their military budgets and existence, and designs of 'Forever Wars', they need to follow Christ's words and "remove the rafters from their own eyes...".
If we go back to another Cold War, it will not be the same as before. Do you really want NATO to still exist? because that is what will happen, and Ukraine and all the Russian satellite nations will still be used as proxies, and the desire to force Russia to be a subservient Nation to The USA (NATO and The West) will still be there.
I do not see a Cold war turning out the same way as it did before, for starters, Russia has Hypersonic weapons, Nuclear-powered nuclear weapons which to all intents and purposes can loiter indefinitely, and worst of all we'll be dealing with an OLD NATO, a corrupt version that won't magically transform itself back into the young, naive version it once was. We also didn't have the Internet then, or A.I, and A.I deep fakes, and Space-rockets that can land back on their tails (as was the dream in 1950's sci-fi), and we didn't have a powerful China.
... Going back to a cold-war mentality will bring us to Nuclear Armageddon faster than we are currently going, and the fact is that the USA, and The Vassal West are in decline, kind of the reverse of what was done to The Soviet Union.
We cannot go back. Russia and China must prevail, and sadly, the future rests on one man's shoulders - Vladimir Putin. I say sadly, because that is a huge burden for Putin as the Only adult in The Room, that can lead the necessary change, and with Respect to China, even they are looking towards him, though their leadership are Adults too. Putin has a good heart, and even now I think he still wishes for partnership, equality, and prosperity based on mutual respect - a lesson The West is going to have to be harshly taught for their own benefit.
To fight the decline is to invite the death of the West, and by that I mean the West will fall far and hard, but to embrace multi-polarity, will see The West survive and prosper, not as the leaders and policemen of The World, but as equal, respectful partners with all nations in the World.
We should not go back to a Cold War, particularly as Russia and its friends are so close to achieving their goals, The goals Vladimir Putin set all that way back in 1999 as Acting President of Russia, goals he has steadfastly worked towards, goals he has not wavered from achieving, and arguably he is very close to doing such, but The West must be taught a lesson, and right now Russia has that capability.
The Narcissist West, and Narcissist Israel do not respect Putin or Russia, yet they are in no position to dictate anything to Russia, or China, and have bet that Putin will never use force against them, that he is bluffing. There comes a point where it is no longer a sin to use WMD's, and that point has come, because the West's intentions, led by the USA and Britain, are painfully clear and known.
I understand Putin's reticence to smack those Bullies hard in the nose and put them on their arses, but I will argue that even God has his limits (according to the Bible), and has destroyed entire Cities and Nations before, and we are told in that same Book, he warned them and us, and gave every chance for those ones to turn around and actually benefit themselves.
I argue, as Putin is a Christian, that he has done everything he can to encourage the enemies of Russia to turn around and actually benefit themselves, but they have viewed that as weakness, and doubled-down on their evil. It is no longer a sin for Putin and Russia to defend themselves, and it is not a sin in these times and circumstances for him to remove the real evil-doers from this World - he cannot let them continue to harm Russia and it's peoples, knowing that many other countries will also fall to these evil narcissists.
In short, either he delivers a serious blow (I have mentioned exactly what form that needs to take before, as has one close to Putin I now learn), or all his hard work for Russia, and The World, will be in vain. There is a way to shock America to its senses without America being physically harmed, but it does involve doing serious damage to the UK.
Why the UK? For many reasons - Because it is far enough away geographically for any Nuclear strikes to be effective, without doing serious harm to Russia. Because it is an historical enemy that has never let up in its hatred towards Russia, because it has a 'special' relationship with Russia, because it continues blatantly and loudly to lie and justify its support of the Murder of Russians and Ukrainians, because it is the Chief instigator of the conflict in Ukraine, but also because by doing so, France, and Germany and the rest of Europe may be spared the worst, but one final reason, though there are many more, because the USA will not launch its Nukes against Russia in that scenario.
NATO is dead already, it doesn't have the man-power, physically or economically, and is already divided. Trump and the US deep-state do not want to lose their Golden land over Britain or Europe.
I will say it again, that Russia needs to pick a target - The City in London, give advance warning, that lives may be saved, then Oreshink the crap out of it regardless if the British leadership evacuates or not, but also be just as clear, that even a twitch of retaliation will be followed swiftly by Nukes.
I am British, I don't want to die in a Russian Nuke-storm, but I see no other way - unless something valuable is Lost in a meaningful way, neither Britain, Europe, NATO, or America will stop their evil towards Russia and other countries.
It is time for those ones to learn that ALL Human beings are equal, and it will no longer be tolerated that One nation or group of nations should treat others as inferior, or as their cannon-fodder. The World cannot go on as it has done, for the sake of ALL Humanity, Russia needs to show that like the USA did back in WWII, Russia has the right, and the resolve to protect itself against the loss of its people, and nation-hood.
As long as Russia gives advanced warning, but stands firm, and gives the chance for evacuation, there will be no sin, but it must also choose the right target/s so that Britain is forced to back off, preferably without the need to demonstrate nuclear resolve, but at the same time, Putin/Russia must resolve to do so if The UK does try to retaliate, rather than immediately cease hostilities and sue for peace.
There are two ways that this will work - If Britain backs off without the need to be Nuked, that will raise Putin and Russia in Trump's and allies eyes, and stand as a clear example of Putin's/Russia resolve, and there will no longer be any need for a cold war, but if Russia has to Nuke the UK after all, that will send the strongest historical lesson of all time.
The USA will respect Putin and Russia, knowing that like them, they have it in them to actually use their WMD's, and that when Putin says it will be the end of all of us, no one will then doubt his, or Russia's resolve to exist as equal partners in this World, as like the USA, they will have proven they are indeed capable of causing equal harm to the USA.
I do not like disagreeing with you Scott, perhaps if you can see the flaws in my counter-proposal, you could write or speak about it, and show me why my proposal is wrong, however I do not see any benefit coming from going back to a cold-war mentality - unless we could literally turn back time, it won't have the needed effects, in my opinion.
You obseved correctly that Putin is a good person, say he is an idealist who looks for understanding and partnership.
The problem is that he obviously has very bad advisers and people who provide the news for him which are the basis of his decisions.
I recently found the narrative that he was falsely threatened that Western forces would plan to nuke out the provinces of Luhansk and Donezk, a fake news which lead him to the decision invading Ukraine.
.
Likewise, his military leaders lack any understanding of effective war. According to Noccolo Machiavelli, only a short, hard and decisive strike is adecuate. The result is the present onslought.
Thirdly, Medwedew as his advisor and forseeable succesor is an evil inciter and warmonger. - Nothing to be optimistic. Without external help, Russia is lost.
I disagree with your analysis, and challenge you to provide evidence of the 'falsely threatened' narrative you claim. It makes no sense for NATO to nuke out Luhansk and Donetsk, that would be Nuking Ukraine at that time, and there were/are too many western interests in keeping that area intact, and Putin is extremely smart, and has never shown any sign of being easily fooled, not to mention that such a strike would likely set off Russia's dead-hand system being that close to their borders.
In addition to that, Putin is not an idealist in the sense of being blind, he is a Christian who values life, recognises what sin is, loves his country, and knows that Nuclear war would be the end of all of us - he acts from his faith, and because he sees the potential for good to come out of peaceful and prosperous partnerships, and I think, wishes to push for that, rather than burning bridges, at least so that if he has to launch Nukes, it can be demonstrated that Russia did its utmost to pursue every chance to avoid that, it's not out of idealism, its out of practicality.
Regarding his team, he couldn't have a better team around him, and Medvedev is not the evil inciter and war-monger that you claim, but has only ever responded to the West's aggression with hard reminders, and no doubt makes the valid case as to why Russia should not hold back, which brings balance to the proceedings.
Now Lyndsay Graham, that is an evil inciter and warmonger. It is understandable that many impatient people see Putin's actions as timidity, and weakness, but this is not the case - they all know that Nuclear War is game over for all involved, the US included, and he, and his team know what they are doing, even if some think he should have struck hard right away.
The fact is that had Russia struck first with a decisive first-strike nuclear attack, that would have given The West all the proof they needed that Russia was a violent state, hell-bent on conquest, and no deaths would have been avoided, in fact a Nuclear war would very likely have already occurred. As it is, the West has had to lie through it's teeth and arses to try and claim Putin is all kinds of things he isn't, and Russia as a Nation it isn't.
It is you who do not understand military or political tactics, and likely think He should have 'Blitzkrieged' Ukraine, because that appears to many to be the supreme art of war, but look at what that did for Hitler - it got him the worst name in History, even Genghis Khan is referred to with more warmth than him, and it is not consistent with what Vladimir Putin has been saying since 1999 (and likely earlier).
Just because Russia didn't take Ukraine quickly, doesn't mean Russia has bad Generals and Commanders - it is The West that is fond of those tactics, and it is The West that planned to have Russia expend its strength, which Russia turned back against The West, into a massive drain on Western Resources.
The length of he SMO benefits Russia more than Ukraine or the West, a Blitzkrieg has too many downsides for Russia. Now though, Russia has EVERY good argument to teach the West a lesson that it will Never forget, and Putin can do that without it being a sin, for what other choice does he have when it comes to protecting Russia, not just short-term, but for the long term?
He hasn't shown weakness, he's shown more strength, than any Western leader in History, and there''s just one final thing to add to the reasons for Russia to have shown restraint - none of the super-weapons were ready for deployment. Now they are.
So I reject your premises that Putin, and his team, including Medvedev, are anything other than consummate professionals, that desire good and productive relations with the West. When Putin sees that he has done all he can to pursue that path, he is free of the sin he fears to commit, and he will do what is necessary.
From my perspective that is now, but I don't have my finger on the pulse of Russia, he does. The current slaughter was always of The West's planning and making, more lives would be lost if he hadn't sprung the West's trap as he did.
dear Scott I wrote this story last year and I wanted it to share with you!: The Russian
Through the Eyes of the Russian. In the depths of our souls, across the centuries, lies a story inscribed in blood and tears, but also in unyielding pride. This is the story of us, the Russians, through the eyes of those who made the greatest sacrifices.
The suffering our ancestors endured during the invasions of Napoleon and the Nazis was not merely a chapter in a history book; it was a tragedy that touched every family. In every village, in every city, there was no house without mourning; no family without loss. Grandfathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, children—lost in the bitter cold of winter, in the fields of Borodino, in the ruins of Stalingrad, under the violence of a war that seemed inhuman. The sacrifice cannot be quantified in numbers, for each life was a world unto itself, each loss a universe of sorrow.
But from this depth of suffering arose a pride as indestructible as the land itself. We defeated both armies, Napoleon's Grande Armée and Hitler's Wehrmacht, who thought they could subdue us. Every battle, every victory, every setback we overcame has etched itself into our soul, not only in those who lived it but also in their children, and the children of their children, up to the present day. This pride is not just a memory of our strength but a living monument to our will to exist, to survive against all odds.
The West, with its comfort and distance, often views these stories without empathy. They see the victory, but not the price that was paid for it. They understand the pride, but not the pain that preceded it. They regard history as something on a page, not as a scar on the heart of a people.
For us, every victory is a reminder of what was lost to achieve it. Every holiday, every parade, every commemoration brings not only joy but also a reflection on the immense sacrifice. We celebrate not only the triumph, but honor those who paid the ultimate price. Our children grow up with tales of courage and loss, learning what it means to fight for your home, for your land, for your family.
This history is not simply a part of our past; it is a part of our identity. It has shaped us, made us who we are—a people that has accomplished the impossible, that has shown that the will to live, to survive, runs deeper than any invasion. This is what those without empathy cannot comprehend; the depth of our loss is as profound as the height of our pride. And this duality of pain and pride will remain etched in our souls forever—let this be a lesson for the world.
I was only a small child in elementary school, when the movie Doctor Zhivago came out in the theaters. Boy, did my parents learn a lesson there (can't keep a 6 year old still in a seat for 3 hours.) that blossomed into a fantasy later in my life. As a young adult, I wanted to know why my father had a love affair with the Russian populace, not the politics of the Soviet Union, but the people of Russia themselves. Well, I certainly found out why. To this day, Doctor Zhivago is the ONLY movie that has ever made my eyes watery and put a lump in my throat, that still happens to this very day after all of those decades.
God bless the people of Russia and their land that has seen an enormity of bloodshed and sacrifice. I see what they are today and how God has blessed them, the remnant that held on and survived. They will never give up their blessings for their courage and faith has saved them.
We are now what the Soviet Union was. Except that the technology has reached the stars, literally. If we don't look back, learn and act on it, then we're certainly doomed.
Hey Mugsy, that's a great idea! Wow! Damn..... Can't get a better spokesperson than ol' Scottso for that one. It's a no-brainer.
Hey, Ritter!! You see this? Mugsy here's got a heck of an idea. I say it's a no-brainer. Go ahead and do it. Get an agent if you can't do a good enough job representing yourself. You need to market yourself and increase your exposure. Take a lesson from the Ruskies too. bank-proof yourself. The road is being laid out for you to walk. Walk it. Walk the OTHER yellow brick road. Not the one that's been mined.
Scott, could you be a spokesman for various companies that pass the "Ritter Smell Test of LIberty"? I'm mot sure. BUT, I do know one thing. It certainly is worth looking into. You need moolah, dough, dinero. Your mission just got way more interesting. GODSPEED , Scott Ritter.
Bravo!! Eloquent. To be shared. Peace and renaissance be to us all. The exponential economic rise of the BRICS countries' economies is proof of the inevitability of truly free market Demand and Supply principles, with the caveat that the Achilles Heal of Capitalism is it's tendency to monopolization, which does require multipolar sovereign nations' agreement on practical limitations reflecting the global interests of sovereign individuals.

Scott, your dogs clearly believe in free speech - or maybe that's free bark?
Thank you, Scott, from a fellow F&Mer! (although they closed the Russian Department when I was there).
Without external help, Russia is lost.
... the result of failing to ealy apply such decisive strike is the present slaughter.

I agree completely ..Thank you Scott
Bank with “Old Glory Bank” in Oklahoma City-they are explicitly anti censorship. Oldglorybank.com. They might even hire you as a spokesperson!
