The US did not track all the effects on Iraq citizens for the last 22 years, but there have been large estimates, which US Govt. contracted research has concluded are invalid.
Note that the radioactive dust that does not get breathed in by humans or animals to be eaten, become part of the soil, used to grow food, introducing radioactivity inside the bodies of people who may not even be in areas where the depleted uranium was used.

Where would it be put that would be safe?

Scott, I have a friend who operated Rapier ground to air missiles during the Falklands War in 1982. He has life threatening cancer which he believes is related to the radar used by these systems. Many of his Rapier system buddies have since died of cancer or are suffering from it. The UK Ministry of Defence and Government takes a negative stance on this similar to the US.
